CPT Design Manual for State Geotechnical Engineers

Project Summary:

This project is producing a new cone penetration testing (CPT) geotechnical design manual for highway and transportation applications based on recent research and innovation (2000?2015). The project outlines a step-by-step procedure on how to use CPT data in the analysis and design of typical geotechnical tasks.

Previous manuals are very outdated, with information from 1970 through 1996 or not appropriately targeted to transportation works. The design introduces modern, recent, advances and research not otherwise captured in legacy manuals from 1990s and earlier. Examples and case studies are provided for each parameter interpreted using CPT measures.

In the manual, a step-by-step procedure outlines how to use CPT data in analysis and design for typical geotechnical practices. These topics, which are applicable both to state highways and local roads, include bridge foundations (including shallow and deep foundations), culverts (including excavations and foundations), walls (including retaining and noise walls), embankments (including embankment construction and embankments on soft soils), and slopes (including fill, cut, and unstable slopes).

A secondary, complementary goal is developing a heterogeneous sensor network to reliably and accurately monitor and identify salient arterial traffic events. Other goals of the project include the integration of the activities with practitioners (e.g., traffic engineers), annual workshops/tutorials, and outreach to K-12 institutions.
