Detecting Driver Fatigue through the Use of Advanced Face Monitoring Techniques

Principal Investigator(s):

Nikos Papanikolopoulos, Professor, Computer Science and Engineering

Project summary:

The objective of this project is to build a multisensory system that detects driver fatigue. We plan to improve our previous work on vision-based detection of fatigue, compute the PERCLOS measure, employ mechanisms that are based on the human skin color, and generally produce a more reliable system. We plan to test our approach in a simulated environment (Wrap-Around Driving simulator at the Human Factors Laboratory) in order to find the potential and the limitations of our approach.
