Tech Fest celebrates 20 years of engaging kids in STEM

In February, CTS returned to The Works Museum in Bloomington for the 20th annual Tech Fest. The event offers hands-on activities designed to get kids from pre-K to third grade interested in STEM.

“CTS has been participating in Tech Fest as a sponsor and exhibitor since 2008, and we were glad to be part of the event’s 20th anniversary,” says Gina Baas, CTS deputy director. “Over the years, our staff have enjoyed the opportunity to develop different activities that just might spark the young attendees' interest in transportation.”

More than 580 people attended this year’s event, visiting tables staffed by 15 partner organizations. At the CTS table, kids made and experimented with nearly 200 “whirlybirds” as part of a paper helicopter activity. Participants learned about basic engineering principles and explored the way helicopter blades create lift and work against gravity.
